Facing a serious life challenge, illness, hospitalization, or the death of a loved one can be daunting experiences, especially for members of the community who may not be affiliated with a synagogue, church or religious organization, but need a spiritual connection at a difficult time.

The JFS Community Chaplaincy program, led by Rabbi Wolff Alterman, focuses on providing direct spiritual care, comfort, and counseling to individuals in the greater Asheville area and beyond who are ill, in crisis, or near the end of their lives—in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health institutions, correctional facilities, or at home. Rabbi Wolff is available to you whether you are brand new to Asheville and haven’t found your religious home, have lived here for decades, or simply happen to be visiting when your crisis or need arises. If you or a loved one is receiving care through an institution that does not have a chaplain available, Rabbi Wolff is available for your religious and spiritual needs. If you simply wish to speak to a rabbi, contact JFS directly.

Whether you need a kosher meal in a hospital, a spiritual counselor to provide a Jewish perspective on a major lifecycle event, or just a compassionate presence to talk to, the Community Chaplaincy program is here to serve you and your family.

In-person and virtual appointments with Rabbi Wolff are available. Call our reception at 828-253-2900 to schedule an appointment.
